EMDR Therapy
Have you experienced something that’s shaken you to your core?
EMDR Therapy Lets You Access Your Emotions On A Deeper Level
Have you experienced something overwhelming—maybe a sudden loss, a life-changing injury, or a betrayal that’s shaken you to your core? Has a lingering sadness taken over your mood, holding you back from the people and things you love?
When thinking about the past, you find it hard not to blame yourself for negative experiences—even when they’re out of your control. Perhaps you’ve tried talk therapy, but that only scratches the surface—and you’re longing for something that allows you to access your emotions on a deeper level.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy offers you an alternative option to true healing by tapping into the parts of the brain where trauma often gets stuck, helping you find relief in ways that solely discussing your feelings can’t always allow for. This treatment allows your mind and body to safely process the experiences that are holding you back so you can feel grounded again.
Understanding EMDR Therapy
EMDR is an evidence-based approach that engages the brain’s natural ability to heal through bilateral stimulation. This can be done by:
● Following a therapist’s hand or a moving light
● Listening to alternating auditory cues
● Tapping yourself gently on the shoulders or legs
These movements that you experience during bilateral stimulation mimic the process of REM sleep—the phase of sleeping where we naturally sort through our memories. Replicating this method while you’re cognizant and fully aware can help bring old memories that may be stored beneath the surface to the forefront.
This often creates a touchstone moment where you realize how the original incident that troubles you shaped how you feel. And learning the origin of your struggles can shape a pathway to overcoming them.
EMDR Therapy is gradual, individualized, and tailored entirely around your comfort. The goal is to help you stay within your window of tolerance—the emotional state in which your mind and body are properly functioning—by keeping you as grounded and present as possible as you move through this experience.

How EMDR Therapy Can Help
If you’ve felt stuck for a while, EMDR can offer the relief that you’ve been hoping for. This method is particularly helpful for people who often feel overstimulated or struggle to put their emotions into words. EMDR allows the body and mind to work together with minimal words.
Over time, EMDR can help you with:
● Alleviating physical symptoms like panic attacks and crying spells
● Interrupting overwhelm and emotional spiraling
● Feeling less reactive or triggered by the reminders of the trauma
● Moving forward and experiencing less intense emotions surrounding the trauma
EMDR Therapy can help you feel lighter, clearer, and more in control of your emotions—sometimes much sooner than expected. Although the timeframe varies depending on what you’re working through, most people find that meaningful relief usually happens within 6-12 sessions.
Your EMDR therapist will provide you with a safe, supportive environment, so that you can experience this powerful, proven method for healing deep-rooted trauma. Here at Space To Reflect Therapy & Coaching, we offer EMDR sessions both in-person and online, so that we can help you feel less overwhelmed by all that life throws at you, no matter where you are.
What To Expect In EMDR Treatment
We typically begin with an intake session, so that our team can get to know and understand who you are and the problem areas we should focus on. We also take this time to ensure that you feel comfortable and supported by answering any questions or concerns that you may have about the process.
From here, you’ll learn valuable concepts such as grounding skills, techniques to regulate your nervous system, and strategies that will help you stay inside your window of tolerance during the reprocessing phase.
Next, we will assess the trauma that you’ve experienced, the painful memories that coincide with it, and the negative mindset that your trauma has created. By gaining insight on how the negative cognition directly connects with your trauma, looking at statements such as, “It’s all my fault,” or “I’ll never be safe,” we can pinpoint a desired area to target. Then, we will work together to track your emotional and physiological responses to help process the memories and emotions.
We will then use bilateral stimulation to help your brain reprocess the traumatic event, filing the memories away in their proper space. As emotional intensity decreases, the meaning associated with the event will begin to shift, and more positive beliefs—such as, “I’m not responsible for what happened,” “I did the best I could,” and “I’m safe,”—can be integrated accordingly.
At the end of each EMDR Therapy session we will assess the progress you’ve made and determine what needs continued work. However, as the process continues overtime, you’ll notice yourself feeling more present, recovering more quickly from the situations that trigger you, and seeing life with more confidence and clarity.
